Bead Your Bedlah
The Bra!
Saturday, October 1, 2011
In this segment of Bead Your Bedlah, we’ll be
learning how to convert an everyday, lingerie bra into a
belly dance costume bra! We’ll learn the basics of
design (including strap variations and fringe placement) and learn how to
cover the bra with fabric so it will match the rest of your costume.
Supplies:
Bra - doesn't matter what color. Needs to be an underwire
with fairly stiff cups. Don't worry about the straps, we'll be cutting them
off!
Fabric to cover the bra - I strongly recommend
something with some stretch to it. It will make your life so much easier!
The crushed stretch velvet works great.
Grosgrain ribbon
- we'll use this to make the straps to go around the back and over the
shoulders (or around the neck, or however you decide to do it!). We'll be
covering this, so color doesn't matter, but you'll want to make sure
you've got the right width for the back strap (if you are well endowed I
recommend using buckram for the back strap - see below) and the shoulder straps (so
you might need two different widths!)
Standard sewing needles
Thread - pick a color that matches your fabric!

Pant hook & eyes - these are for keeping your bra closed!
You might also want some snaps, depending how things lay, but those can
always be added later!
Straight pins - I like the long ones with the colored bob
on the end
*optional*
Push-up pads - these are little
inserts you can get at Jo-Ann's and
Hobby Lobby
that give your girls a little more oomph ;)
Boning - if you are well endowed this will help add
stability to the cups and make them fit better
Buckram, interfacing, quilt batting - this is in case you
want to make medallions to attach to the bra. I'll just touch on this a
little bit, so we won't actually make them in class, but you might want it
for future use. The buckram is also used to make the back strap if you need
more support.
Embellishments - More than likely we won't get to actually
embellishing the bra in the workshop. My goal is just to help you get it
covered! But you'll probably want these things later :)
